There are too many fly fishing reels. So how does one choose the right one? The first thing to keep in mind is our general rule; 1:1:1 ratio. This means that your fly rod, fly reel, and fly line should all have the same weight ratings. Larger reels are better for a few reasons. They offer more versatility, more control, as well as more backing and fly line. This means you can fish bigger-game fish. There are two main drag systems on fly reels. These are Disc Drag and Click and Pawl fly reels. Each comes with it’s own pros and cons. Disc Drag offers more control and flexibility. While Click and Pawl is more of a traditional fly reel. It doesn’t offer the same control and power that the Disc Drag. Cleaning your fly reel is often overlooked when it shouldn’t be.
